To transfer a residence permit to a new passport in Egypt, start by checking the permit’s expiry date, comparing both passports and confirming the required update with the competent immigration office. Renewing your passport does not, by itself, mean that your existing residence status has ended. However, the new document must be connected with your existing residence and entry records. Updating passport details and renewing a residence permit are separate matters.
A common mistake is to travel or begin a new application with only the new passport, leaving behind the old document containing the entry visa, residence endorsement or stamps that establish the history of your stay.
When should you update your residence details?
- Your passport has expired and you have received a replacement.
- Your passport was lost or damaged and a new travel document has been issued.
- Your name or other personal details have changed through an official process.
- Your nationality or type of travel document has changed in a case requiring additional checks.
- Your current residence endorsement or latest Egyptian entry stamp is in an old passport, while you now use a new one.
Keep your old passport
Do not discard the old passport after cancellation. It may still be important evidence of lawful entry, your residence number, travel history and previous visas. Keep the original where available and clear copies of the identity page, latest entry stamp, residence endorsement and any official observations.
Documents to prepare
The following is a practical preparation checklist, rather than a universal official list. Confirm the documents required for your nationality, residence category and circumstances before applying.
- Your valid new passport and a copy of its identity page.
- Your old passport; if unavailable, the loss report and replacement documentation required for your case.
- A copy of your valid residence permit or the latest document establishing your residence status.
- Current evidence supporting your residence, whether based on employment, study, investment, property or family circumstances.
- An official document explaining any change of personal details beyond routine passport renewal.
- Photographs and the competent authority’s forms, where requested.
If your passport has been lost
A lost-passport case needs a more carefully ordered file. Record the loss through the required procedure, obtain a replacement travel document from your embassy or consulate, and assemble evidence of your previous entry and residence. Keep secure digital copies of your passport and permit; an unclear photograph on a phone may not establish the necessary details.
As a nationality-specific example, the U.S. Department of State’s Egypt guidance says that a U.S. traveller who loses a passport containing the entry stamp must obtain a replacement stamp from an Egyptian government office after receiving the new passport. Confirm the applicable procedure for your own case with Egyptian immigration and your diplomatic mission.
Can you travel before updating your passport details?
Check your position before booking. The airline or border authorities may need to establish the connection between the old and new documents. Carrying both may be necessary when the visa or residence endorsement remains in the old passport, but this is not a guarantee of boarding, departure or re-entry.
The answer depends on the validity and category of your residence, your nationality and the travel document issued. Ask the competent authority what must be completed before departure and what evidence will be required for return.
Common mistakes that delay the process
- Leaving an unexplained difference in the English spelling of your name between the two passports.
- Failing to copy the old passport’s entry and residence pages.
- Waiting until the residence permit is close to expiry.
- Submitting expired documents supporting the reason for residence.
- Using different passport numbers in parallel applications without explaining and updating the records.
A practical sequence before applying
- Establish your current residence status and exact expiry date.
- Compare the personal details in both passports, including name spelling.
- Collect current documents supporting the basis of your residence.
- Determine whether you need a passport-data update, a residence renewal, or both.
- Confirm the latest instructions with the competent office before submitting the file.

Frequently asked questions
Is a cancelled old passport no longer useful?
It may still provide evidence of previous entry, residence and the connection between your old and new travel documents. Keep it if it is returned to you.
What if my name is spelled differently?
Identify the reason and prepare the official supporting document or translation needed to connect the records. Do not leave the authority to infer that the two names refer to the same person.
Does transferring passport details renew my residence permit?
Not necessarily. A data update and a residence renewal are distinct procedures. They may need to be addressed together depending on the expiry date and your file.
