A foreign national’s work residence in Egypt does not begin with signing an employment contract alone. The process generally involves two coordinated files: a work permit from the competent Ministry of Labour authority and a residence permit from the General Administration of Passports, Immigration and Nationality. Steps vary by nationality, occupation, employer, and business entity.
Work permit and residence permit
The work permit authorizes a foreigner to perform specified work for a specified employer under applicable rules. Residence regulates the person’s lawful stay for the period and purpose shown on the permit. Having one does not automatically complete the other, so coordinate both files from the start.
Documents commonly reviewed
- Valid passport and relevant entry and prior residence records.
- Employment contract or assignment letter and employer details.
- Company commercial-register and tax documents, as applicable.
- Qualifications and experience records, authenticated and translated when required.
- Photographs, address evidence, and any examinations or approvals requested.
- Evidence addressing foreign-worker rules, quotas, or an applicable exemption.
Practical sequence
- Check the occupation, nationality, and employer before filing.
- Complete authentication and translations and match names across all records.
- File and track the work-permit application and required approvals.
- Complete the residence file using the correct employment basis.
- Track expiry and renewal dates well in advance.
Common delays include inconsistent names, expired company documents, a job title unsupported by qualifications, missing attestations, or starting work before authorization.
